More than 1.3 tons of pharmaceuticals disguised as cosmetics were discovered being imported into Almaty.

A large batch of undeclared medications imported from India under the guise of cosmetics was discovered at Almaty International Airport.

According to information from the Almaty Department of State Revenue, as reported by the media, customs inspection revealed a discrepancy between the actual contents of the cargo and the accompanying documents. The goods were declared as cosmetics, but were actually pharmaceuticals.

A total of 39 medications, weighing 1,324 kg, were discovered. According to preliminary estimates, the customs value of the shipment exceeds 5 million tenge.

Authorized agencies are currently conducting an investigation. Based on its findings, a decision will be made on whether to hold those responsible accountable.

The State Revenue Department reminded that failure to declare or falsely declaring goods entails administrative liability in accordance with Article 551 of the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Administrative Offenses – a fine of 25% of the value of the goods.

Furthermore, according to Article 545 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the movement of goods across the customs border of the Eurasian Economic Union in violation of established prohibitions and restrictions is punishable by a fine and possible confiscation of the items involved. The amount of the penalty varies depending on the category of the offender and ranges from 15 to 50 monthly calculation indices.

A similar case of illegal drug trafficking was also recorded on the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border. According to Kyrgyz tax authorities, a batch of medications was detected being imported without accompanying documentation at the Ak-Zhol checkpoint.

During a raid, 25 boxes of various medications worth over 1.1 million soms were discovered in a truck. The appropriate reports were filed, the vehicle was impounded, and the medications were seized.

The materials have been transferred to law enforcement agencies for legal assessment.

The identified cases indicate the continuing risks of illegal cross-border circulation of medicinal products and the need to strengthen controls over their declaration and movement within the integration spaces.
