To which countries does Kazakhstan export its medicines?

Last year, the volume of pharmaceutical production in the country increased by 21.8% and reached 171.6 billion tenge. The volume of investments in the industry doubled and amounted to 91.3 million dollars. This is stated in the response of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan to a request from the Kazinform agency.

According to the Bureau of National Statistics, pharmaceutical exports amounted to 27,874.34 thousand US dollars in 2024. The main importing countries were Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Slovenia, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Tajikistan.

— Today, there are 207 pharmaceutical manufacturers in Kazakhstan, 43 of which specialize in the production of medicines, and 164 in the production of medical devices. 25 domestic manufacturers have a GMP certificate. As part of the instruction of the Head of State to increase the share of domestic production in the pharmaceutical market to 50%, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan is implementing a number of measures, — the response says.

In particular, the following measures are proposed:

changing approaches to the formation of the range of medicines and medical products, which will allow increasing production in accordance with the real needs of the healthcare system;

development of R&D in the pharmaceutical industry and creation of training centers to focus on the production of high-tech and innovative drugs and medical products;

to amend the terms of long-term contracts for the supply of medicines and medical devices - up to 10 (ten) years for a full production cycle and up to 5 (five) years for an incomplete production cycle in order to create conditions for a full production cycle and attract direct investment, as well as to reduce the cost of manufactured products;

stimulation of joint clinical trials of domestic and foreign manufacturers while maintaining the license for the innovative drug for the Kazakhstani partner.

The Ministry's response notes that the implementation of the proposed measures will contribute to increasing the level of localization of production in Kazakhstan, improving the quality of domestic products, expanding their range taking into account the transfer of technologies and new developments, and ensuring the achievement of the target indicator - the share of composite theoretical productivity (CTP) at the level of 50%.
